Fraser Island is another one of Australia’s stunning natural wonders and is situated just off the coast of Queensland about 300km’s north of Brisbane. Fraser Island is approximately 120 kilometres long and 24 kilometres wide and covers an area of 1840 square kilometres. This makes Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world and Australia’s 6th largest island. Once known as Great Sandy Island its name was changed to Fraser Island following stories about a shipwreck survivor named Eliza Fraser. On Fraser Island you will find lush rainforest, sand dunes, wallum heaths, mangroves, eucalyptus forests, impressive lakes, crystal clear creeks and an abundance of Australian wildlife. All of this natural diversity is topped off with beautiful white sandy beaches running around the island. The many lakes on the island attract a plethora of native species and some of the lakes you can see on a trip to the Island are Lake Wabby, Lake Mc Kenzie and Basin lake just to name a few.
Fraser Island is easily accessible from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach near Tin Can Bay and on any of the Fraser Island day tours and extended tours from Brisbane. Tours range from one day tours through to 5 day tours and there is a variety of different accommodation options on each tour giving you the choice of camping and dorm style accommodation right through to fully self contained holiday apartments. The land based tours to Fraser Island are all conducted in 4WD vehicles and in some cases they have been specifically designed just for doing tours on the island. Another way to see the Island is from the air on a scenic helicopter flight which gives you a great perspective of the size and layout. Also available are sailing cruises from Hervey Bay of Kingfisher Bay resort and often on these cruises you can see turtles, dolphins and at the right time of year the majestic Hump back whales.
